1. Who was Vincent Van Gogh? Be specific.
was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art for its vivid colors and emotional impact. Suffering from anxiety and increasingly frequent bouts of mental illness throughout his life, he died largely unknown at the age of 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
2. Why was he so famous?
Between November of 1881 and July of 1890, Vincent van Gogh painted almost 900 paintings. Since his death, he has become one of the most famous painters in the world. Van Gogh’s paintings have captured the minds and
hearts of millions of art lovers and have made art lovers of those new to world of art.
3. What was happening in the United States during the time period?
Vincent led a short life, 1853-1890. Many world events transpired during that time. The Crimean War was on in 1853 when he was born, in 1855 Czar Nicholas I of Russia died and succeeded by Alexander II. Charles Darwin published 'Origin of the Species' in 1859. Abraham Lincoln was elected US president in 1860, the Civil war, 1861-65. In 1864 Louis Pasteur invents pasteurization. The French capture Mexico City in 1863 and set up Archduke Maximilian of Austria as emperor of Mexico. The Franco Prussian war breaks out in 1870.
